'Mission Impossible 4' to be filmed in Dubai

The fourth sequel of action blockbuster "Mission Impossible" starring Oscar-winning actor Tom Cruise will be partly filmed in Dubai, the Gulf Arab emirate's media office said on Tuesday.

Dubai, a regional tourism and trading center, is slowly emerging from a debt crisis following a crash of its property market after a global financial downturn. The slowdown led to billions of dollars in project cancellations and thousands of job losses.
"Preparations for filming in Dubai have been agreed with the production company, Paramount, following two months of meetings and location scouting," the media office said in a statement.
"Actual filming of the project, that will attract more than 400 industry professionals, is expected to commence within a few weeks," it added.
 

Cargo plane 'crashes on Dubai highway'

DUBAI (Reuters) - A cargo plane crashed on a busy highway in Dubai on Friday, setting some cars on fire, Al Arabiya television reported.

Ambulances were rushing to the area, located near a residential district, the station added. It did not report the model of aircraft or its size. Officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Dubai hotels have one month to stop using alcohol in the preparation of food or face stiff fines, a top official told Arabian Business on Monday.

Fines will range from AED2,000 to AED20,000, even rising to as much as AED500,000 for serious repeat offenders.

Police unveil plan for city where children can drive

In a bid to teach good driving skills from an early age, Abu Dhabi Police on Sunday unveiled Traffic City – a police-monitored town where children as young as five can drive cars on real roads.

The project, revealed on the first day of GCC Traffic Week, reported in the National on Monday, is set to cost AED150m ($49m).

One section of the city will be set aside for children aged five to 12 to drive electric cars that reach speeds of 15km per hr.

In another section, children aged 13-17 will be able to drive petrol cars that go up to 20km per hr. Police officers will be able to monitor both sections by CCTV cameras.

According to the report, all roads will have real traffic lights, roundabouts and overpasses as well as rain and fog simulators.

“This will teach drivers to commit to the rules at a young age. They will learn to wear seat belts and listen to police instructions since they are children,” Major Ahmed al Niyadi, head of media and marketing for the Abu Dhabi traffic police, was reported as saying.

Construction on the project is set to begin next year and will take five years to complete, officials told the paper.
